Man gutted after dropping £1,000 engagement ring in lake during proposal

Proposals are stressful at the best of times – let alone when you’re documenting the moment and everything goes horribly wrong.

Ross Bamber fell victim to a traumatic engagement to his girlfriend Geri Ashforth after the groom-to-be dropped the engagement ring (worth almost £1,000) through the decking and into the water.

The picturesque and romantic lakeside proposal quickly took a dramatic turn as documented in a video on TikTok – which has surpassed a whopping 3.5 million views to date.

from the ring falling out of the box, bouncing out of sight, and even tumbling into the river.

Geri, 23, was caught saying, “tell me that wasn’t what I thought it was”, whilst she covered her eyes with her hands.

The couple’s engagement video was filmed during a romantic trip to a lake retreat in Watton, Norfolk on Wednesday, 15, June.

The mental health professionals – who met five years ago while working at the same care home – quickly rocketed into TikTok stardom with the viral clip.

“I literally couldn’t believe it,” Ross said. “I didn’t even manage to get down on one knee.

“I took the ring out of my pocket and as I opened the box the ring fell out.

“The ring bounced a couple of times and then fell between the gaps of the decking.”

He quickly came to the rescue as he improvised with a promise ring that was already on Geri’s engagement finger.

The couple went out the following day to purchase another ring, they then returned to to the lake to do the proposal all over again – and this time without dropping the ring.

Ross said that he’s still hoping to retrieve the original engagement ring, which he bought for £999.

He said: “I’ve spoken to the owner of the lake and he’s happy to help us find the ring.

“Geri was quite upset about the whole thing.

“She said to me when I dropped it ‘Tell me that wasn’t what I thought it was’

“I was like ‘Yes it was, I’m so sorry’, and she said she didn’t want to look or even open her eyes.”

Ross and Geri, who are both mental health professionals, first met five years ago while working at the same care home.

They got together last February and a proposal has been on the cards ever since Ross gave Geri a promise ring ten months ago.

A viewer asked: “That must have been a heavy ring long – was he pranking you?” Someone commented beside a laughing emoji.

The couple commented, “I wish it was a prank.. It was a very expensive engagement”.

Others decided to look on the bright side as another penned: “I actually think this is such a funny engagement in a good way. Imagine now fishing it out and stuff.

“The stories they’ll tell their grandkids etc.”

“So, what’s the conclusion? Did you proceed with the proposal and most importantly, did she say yes?!!” A second questioned.

Geri replied: “We carried on and I said YES! Then we went out the next day, bought a new ring and did it all again the next evening!”
